Who We Are
For over ten years, the concept of Tangent Movement has been evolving.
The definition of a tangent line in math is a right angle off a circular path.
Similarly, Tangent Movement offers you a new approach to movement, breaking
the cycle of inactivity, defeat, and frustration that has held you back in the past.
Inspired by different exercise modalities, we seek to offer unique perspective on movement for a more holistic developmental Pilates practice.
With a spectrum of classes ranging from more traditional to contemporary, we emerge as a unique and immersive Pilates experience for the experienced practitioner and those new to the modality.
Our Team
Christen Backes
Christen has always had a passion for supporting others and finding success in safe and energetic exercise. Movement has been a more recent element in her life as she grew up and struggled with unresolved pain, working out became her last priority. It was only through discovering Pilates, a safe and gentle form of movement for her body, that her practice has taken hold and brought her a sense of empowerment over her own body she never thought possible. She now uses that knowledge and empathy to support others find a safe, pain free way to exercise through Pilates.

Joe Cornelius
Joe has had a lifelong passion for movement. His practice was inspired first through sports in his youth and then as a form of recovery due to a serious head injury. With a keen understanding of anatomy, he helps you feel empowered through a sense of conscious movement.“I am multilingual when it comes to the languages of movement and the body. I believe there isn't one right answer but a combination of different practices that will contribute to the best fit for you” -Joe
